To become a superpower, the European Union must strengthen its military capabilities, Kissinger and Radek Sikorski agreed during the debate held at the Department of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology.

Poland's foreign minister said that Poland was for “permanent military cooperation within the 27-nation bloc".

Kissinger argued that Europe currently lacks a “single coherent voice” and "strategic approach” on defence issues.

He also noted that there is a declining enthusiasm for defence spending in individual states in Europe following involvement in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The debate, “Kissinger and Sikorski on Europe” was broadcast live by the TVP public television channel this morning.

Henry Kissinger served as Secretary of State under two U.S. presidents: Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, and as head of the National Security Council and National Security Advisor under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.

Kissinger will later meet with Poland's president Bronislaw Komorowski at the Presidential Palace. (pg)
