Romney, who will be in Poland early next week, told an audience of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Reno, Nevada, Tuesday, that President Obama – seeking re-election in November elections - had engaged in appeasement of Russia that “began with the sudden abandonment of friends in Poland and the Czech Republic” after he cancelled plans by his predecessor, George W. Bush, to install an anti-ballistic missile system in the two central European countries.

Russia had bitterly opposed the plan.

Romney's speech attacked Obama's foreign policy record, accusing him of “lecturing Israeli leaders”, and that the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in 2014 was a “politically timed retreat”.

Mitt Romney embarks on a six-day overseas tour on Wednesday, with the last leg of the trip being in Poland.

The Republican candidate will be visiting Great Britain and Israel before arriving to Gdansk on 30 July.

Romney will meet with former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wałęsa, who formally invited the GOP candidate to Poland.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk will also be in attendance.

"At the time when he was elected, I considered Obama as a reformer of the United States and the world,” Lech Wałęsa has told Radio Gdansk.

“I must say that so far, I haven’t noticed what I was hoping for. This is why I look for what could be better for Europe and Poland,” he added.

After meeting Wałęsa in Gdansk, Romney will then travel to Warsaw for talks with President Bronisław Komorowski and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski inWarsaw.

According to Mitt Romney's staff, his visit will emphasize the special ties he recognizes between Poland and the United States. (pg/aba)
