US Republican candidate in November's presidential election, Mitt Romney, is to arrive in Poland on the third leg of his tour of “key US foreign policy allies” on Monday afternoon.

Romney will arrive in Gdansk on the Baltic coast where he will have talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and later with former Polish president and Solidarity leader Lech Walesa.

Romney has already been in the UK and Israel and will spend two days in Poland.

On Tuesday, the Republican candidate will travel to Warsaw, where he will have meetings with Poland's foreign minister, Radek Sikorski and President Bronislaw Komorowski.

Romney had a good reception in Israel, where he told an audience in Jerusalem on Sunday that the US shares concerns over Iran's alleged nuclear weapons ambitions and seemingly did not rule out an armed intervention if other measures failed.

"We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel's right to defend itself, and that it is right for America to stand with you," he said.

The trip to London on Friday did not go so well, however, after a series of gaffes, including criticism of the UK's preparations for the London 2012 Olympics, bringing a sharp rebuke from Prime Minister David Cameron.

After Romney, who was the business coordinator for the 1992 Salt Lake city winter Olympic Games, voiced concerns over security arrangements at London 2012, PM Cameron said that “anyone can organise games in the middle of nowhere”.

Romney has said that he chose the three destinations for his foreign policy trip ahead of November's elections, because the UK, Israel and Poland were three “pillars of liberty”.

He told an audience in the US last week that President barack Obama had “abandoned Poland” after he cancelled George W. Bush's plans to install an anti-missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic. (pg)
