The ceremony on Tuesday occurred on the fourth of eight days of the celebration of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights.

Bronislaw Komorowski met with Israeli Ambassador to Poland Zvi Rav-Ner, Polish Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich and other members of Poland's Jewish community at the Belweder Palace in Warsaw.

President Komorowski said that Hanukkah and Christmas holidays were a time of “sacred joy, confidence and hope”.

"I am convinced that at this particular moment, you can easily feel that we are children of the same God and that we are human beings subjected to the same tests, but also gifted with the same hopes,” the Polish president said.

Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December. (pg)
