The 37-year-old lawyer from Poznan, western Poland, has now reached the peaks of six of the so-called seven summits, taking in the highest mountains of the world's seven continents.

Wroblewski took on Vinson Massif as part of a five-person Polish-American team.

The group had originally hoped to reach the summit of Vinson Massif on Christmas Eve.

However, they were obliged to wait two days, until weather conditions proved favourable.

Speaking to the Gazeta Wyborcza daily having returned safely to Chile, Wroblewski affirmed that “it was a very special Christmas for me.”

He now plans to have a crack at Mount Everest for a second time, having come within a thousand metres of the summit last year.

“I'm better prepared now,” he said.

“I convinced myself of this on Vinson Massif. If I can only find the money, I'll attack the Roof of the World this year,” he concluded. (nh)
