Polish troops say they have arrested a master bomb builder in Afghanistan who is thought to be behind the deaths of five Poles killed in the east of the country in December 2011.

Spokesman of the Armed Forces Operational Command, Major Marek Pietrzak says the arrest took place during Monday night, Tuesday morning in a village in the Ghazni province, after receiving information from Polish special forces that bomb-making materials had been found there.

The arrested man is Habib Rahman, alias Abdul Hanan, who allegedly led training for insurgents in the making of improvised explosive devices, or IEDS.

The explosives were found in a make-shift pit, Major Pietrzak said.

Polish troops also secured a number of electronic devices.

“The man most suspected of preparing the attack [on Polish troops] in December 2011 has been captured. However, the terrorist network involved in the incident is very broad,” Pietrzak said.

Five Poles from the Provincial Reconstruction Team of the 20th Mechanized Brigade were killed on 21 December 2011 after an IED exploded under their military vehicle.

Poland currently has over 2,000 troops in Afghanistan, who are set to withdraw from the country, alongside other NATO troops in 2014. (pg)
