Komorowski had talks on Wednesday with President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy on the prospective EU Association Agreement with Ukraine, by which non-EU members gain privileges in economic, political and cultural spheres.

“We exchanged views concerning what can be done to mobilise Ukraine to activities that would lead to all conditions being carried out for the signing of the Association Agreement in November this year,” Komorowski told journalists, as cited by the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

The “game of the highest stakes” concerns whether Ukraine will lean more to the EU, or its eastern neighbour, the Russian Federation.

Komorowski is due to speak with his Ukrainian counterpart, Viktor Yanukovych, today.

Post-crisis growth strategy for the EU

Some twenty heads of state from the region are taking part in the two-day summit, which this year is being held under the slogan 'Growth strategy for after the crisis.'

“The theme of the summit is full of optimism,” Komorowski affirmed.

“On the one hand, Poland has a lot to offer, because it continues to maintain competitiveness within the EU,” he said.

“The prospect of moving on from the European crisis means that those countries that are now experiencing profound difficulties need to restructure, and to reform,” he added. (nh)
