Wladyslaw Haniszewski had apparently been living in America for close to thirty years.

The man suffered a stroke while being treated at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey.

He was deported via so-called “medical repatriation”, which permits clinics to fly patients who are illegal immigrants back to their native countries on chartered flights.

“The transport of an unconscious man without a guardian and without consultation with the embassy or consulate, behind our backs, has never happened to us before,” said Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka, Polish consul in New York, in an interview with Poland's TVN24 station.

Haniszewski awoke at a hospital in Boleslawiec, south western Poland. It is understood that he is still not able to speak.

The Associated Press recently claimed that 600 illegal immigrants had been deported via medical repatriation over the last five years. (nh)
