Papoulias, who has been the Greek head of state since 2005, is also to have talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and speakers of the lower and upper houses of parliament, Ewa Kopacz and Bogdan Borusewicz respectively.

The talks with Polish politicians are concerned primarily with the priorities of the Greek Presidency of the EU Council, which will begin on 1 January 2014.

President Komorowski will host an official dinner in honour of President Papoulias later on Monday and on Tuesday he will visit the southern city of Krakow and the site of the German Nazi WW II death camp in Auschwitz.

The Greek president's visit comes as Greece hopes eurozone finance ministers will free up another 8 billion euro tranche of aid on Monday.

The latest loan instalment is part of a 240 billion euro rescue package that expires at the end of 2014. (pg)
