“By the end of this year new housing will have been built for over a dozen patients,” says a statement on Poland's Foreign Ministry web site.
Last year around 240,000 new cases of leprosy were diagnosed worldwide, with 58 percent of that number found in India.
Father Marian Żelazek (1918-2006), who was nominated twice by the Nobel Peace Prize committee for his work in India, was involved in setting up a leper colony and school for 600 pupils in Puti, which is situated on the Bay of Bengal, from 1975. (pg)
