Escaped UK prisoner arrested in Poland

Ian McLean, who escaped from a mental health unit in Oxford, had been serving a life sentence for stabbing his former partner.

He had previously served at Bullingdon Prison, near Bicester. However, the UK's Justice Ministry decided to transfer him to Oxford's Littlemore Mental Hospital, which is not a fully locked facility.

Staff last saw the escapee on the night of 8 July.

He was detained under a European Arrest Warrant in Kolobrzeg eight days later, and arrangements are currently being made to extradite him back to the UK.

Michelle Storer, former partner of McLean, has criticized Oxford health authorities for not ensuring that he was kept under lock and key.

“At the end of the day they have admitted he was a dangerous person but he was being kept in an unlocked unit,” she told local news source Banbury Cake.

“I would say they need their heads testing. There’s no way he should have been allowed there without a complete assessment,” she said, adding that she had “lived in total fear for the past eight days.”
