Sebastian Kinasiewicz, who is in the US as part of a training programme, was last seen at 8 am local time on Sunday 11 August.

Monday's search was suspended at 10.44 pm, although efforts were due to begin again at dawn.

According to a statement released by the Hood River County Sheriffs Office, Kinasiewicz told his room-mate that he was setting off to conquer the summit of Mount Hood, which rises to over 3400 metres above sea level.

Kinasiewicz's car was located on Monday, but it is unclear which route the man took to climb the mountain.

The soldier had been taking part in a programme led by Insitu, an American company that makes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) based in the neighbouring state of Washington. (nh)
