Maksymilian Starosciak, from Wroclaw in south west Poland, had been travelling with his friend Krzysztof Wroblewski.

The pair had been keeping an online record of the trip on Facebook, and yesterday Wroblewski revealed that disaster had struck.

“Three days ago we had an accident,” Wroblewski wrote.

“On the road between Quito and the border of Bolivia, a car going in the opposite direction cut into us on one of the curbs, hitting me and Max.

“Despite my attempts to resuscitate him, Max died before the ambulance got there.

“I ask you to remember Max, a man whom I loved, who was my best friend and one of the best people I have ever known.... Let our thoughts be with his family.”

The two young men had driven through over 30 countries across five continents, averaging about 300 km a day.

They had been due to return to Wroclaw on 1 September. (nh)
