A new edition of the book TIME: 100 New Scientific Discoveries pays tribute to work carried out by a team led by Krakow's Jagiellonian University.

Over the last ten years, Polish academics have made sensational finds in the Guatemalan jungle at Nakum, amid the ruins of a former Mayan city.

Dr Jaroslaw Zralka led the expeditions with colleague Wieslaw Koszkul, uncovering tombs of former Mayan rulers.

The burial chambers, which were the first ever to be revealed at the overgrown site, housed a horde of wonders, including ceramics, jewellery and ceremonial objects.

A further expedition is planned for March 2014.

TIME describes its new book as hailing “breakthroughs or insights that will change your world in ways you might never have imagined.” (nh)
