Barroso to attend Mazowiecki funeral

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso is to attend the funeral on Sunday of Poland’s first prime minister following the 1989 fall of communism, Tadeusz Mazowiecki.

European Commission spokesman Cezary Lewanowicz confirmed to the PAP news agency that the commission chief will arrive on Sunday morning for the funeral service in Warsaw, which begins at 11 am local time.
Jose Manuel Barroso issued a statement on Monday morning, after the death of the 86 year-old politician was announced, noting that Mazowiecki was one of the “founding fathers of democratic Poland and new Europe”.
Tadeusz Mazowiecki will be buried in his family grave in Laski not far from Warsaw. (pg)
