Authorities in Russia handed over a formal protest to Wojciech Zajaczkowski, Poland’s ambassador to Moscow, which condemns the attack, with further demands of an official apology and payment of costs incurred for the destruction of its property in the Polish capital.

A police guard’s cabin outside the Russian Embassy was set on fire and the grounds of the building were pelted with stones and firecrackers, as some demonstrators tried to scale the fence during the march by supporters of far-right groups All-Polish Youth and National Radical Camp (ONR) during Monday’s march.

“The Ambassador’s attention was drawn to the fact that the [Polish] police acted passively and with delay,” the Russian statement reads, adding that it believes the attack is a “brutal violation by the Polish authorities of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.”

Security has been stepped up at the Russian Embassy in Warsaw in the wake of yesterday’s attacks.

Following the incident, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement expressing “its deep regret at the violent behavior and incidents that took place at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Warsaw,” adding that the attacks merit “strong condemnation.” (jb)
