Commodore Janusz Walczak from the Ministry of National Defense has told Polish Radio that around 40 percent of the huge logistics operation of transporting thousands of tons of equipment and arms back to Poland has already been completed.

This includes 180 armored personnel carriers, command and other special purpose vehicles as well as helicopters.

By the end of April the Polish contingent should be relocated from its present headquarters in Ghazni province to the American base in Bagram, Commodore Walczak disclosed.

Poland has around 1,500 troops stationed in Afghanistan as part of the international ISAF mission.

Reducing the Polish contingent also involves responsibility for the utilization of that part of the arms arsenal and equipment the technical condition of which does not qualify it for further use. This is estimated at some 17 percent of the total.

Apart from that, in line with earlier agreements, the Polish armed forces command will be handing over most of the non-military equipment worth several million dollars to local Afghan administration which is to use it for civilian needs. (ss)
