Poll: majority agree with Russia hosting Olympics but terror threat real

Though just one-in-five Poles have told an opinion pollster that Russia should not have been awarded the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, which begins in two weeks time, the terrorist threat is real, say respondents.

Fifty percent of respondents told the CBOS pollster that they do not object to the games being given to Russia amid criticism of the decision by gay campaigners, the tense situation in the North Caucasus and the growing threat of terrorism during the event.
Right wing and elderly respondents were most against the decision to allow Sochi to host the Winter Olympics, the pollster found.
Fifty nine percent said they believed there was a significant threat of terrorism during the games where 88 nations are competing, after a twin bomb attack in the Russian city of Volgograd in December which killed 34 people.
A militant Islamist group based in Dagestan in the North Caucasus claimed responsibility for the attacks.
The poll was taken between 9 and 15 January from a sample of 1,067. (pg)
