MEP Jacek Protasiewicz, who is also a regional boss of the ruling centre-right Civic Platform, is reported to have shouted "Heil Hitler!" and "Have you ever been to Auschwitz?" when challenged by a German customs official while passing through border control on Tuesday.

Protasiewicz admitted to having drunk "two bottles of wine" during his flight from Warsaw and said the remarks came after the customs official was rude to him and had "shoved him," the German tabloid Bild reports.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who is also boss of the Civic Platform party, said that no matter what the circumstances, the senior MEP's behaviour was "unacceptable".

"We will decide on the future of Protasiewicz and his role in the European Parliament in the next few days," Tusk said at a press conference on Thursday. (pg)
