Obama to attend 1989 June elections anniversary

US President Barack Obama will visit Poland on 4 June for events marking the 25th anniversary of parliamentary elections when Solidarity a landslide victory, it has been confirmed.

President Bronislaw Komorowski's office has said in a statement that the Polish head of state hopes that the visit will also be an opportunity to reaffirm US security guarantees for central Europe at a time of crisis in Ukraine.

The presidents of Germany and France are also to attend the celebrations in Warsaw on 4 June, including a joint session of both houses of the National Assembly.

US Vice President Joe Biden has said that Obama's visit to Europe will include a G7 summit in Brussels and celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Allied landing in Normandy. (pg/mk)
