Support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and its independence are “key to the security of the entire region”, Poland’s President Bronislaw Komorowski said following a meeting of regional heads of state in Warsaw, Tuesday.

The comment comes after a meeting between the heads of state of nine Central European countries: the Visegrad Four (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary), the Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) as well as Romania and Bulgaria.

The summit of CEE presidents was to discuss issues surrounding regional security and Ukraine ahead of a NATO summit in Newport, Wales, in early September.

“Today’s meeting showed that many issues are approached in nearly exactly the same way, which means that in the upcoming NATO summit in Newport we will […] have similar expectations and needs,” Komorowski underlined.

President Komorowski underlined that it is important to keep an ‘open-door’ policy for countries to join the Alliance should they be eligible to do so. “Of course, only if they show interest in doing so,” he added. (jb)
