According to Greek media, the 51-year-old receptionist had asked a group of Polish tourists to keep the noise down after they returned from a night out on the island.

The Poles, who were reportedly under the influence of alcohol, allegedly became involved in a struggle with the man.

One of the Poles pushed the receptionist, who fell down some stairs and severely injured his head. The man died in hospital on Sunday evening.

Two of the Poles have already left the island, according to Poland's foreign ministry, although they have been charged as accomplices in the fight.

The third man, who allegedly gave the fatal push to the receptionist, remains under arrest in Greece.

He could serve up to five years behind bars. (nh)
