Poland's foreign minister has expressed solidarity with the UK after the brutal murder of British hostage David Haines by Islamic State (IS) militants.

A frame grab from a video released by the Islamic State (IS) on 14 September 2014 shows an IS militant dressed in black (R) and holding holding a knife before purpotedly executing British national David Cawthorne Haines (L)somewhere in a desert setting. David Haines, 44, was working with refugees for the French non-profit Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development when he was abducted in March 2013 by Islamist fighters in northern Syria

“Solidarity from Poland with the family and compatriots of David Haines, the British hostage heinously murdered by ISIL fanatics. Pure evil,” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski tweeted as ministers are set to meet in Paris to discuss how to defeat the jihadist insurgency in Iraq and Syria.

About 40 countries, including Poland and 10 Arab states, have signed up to a coalition to help fight IS, though the Polish government said it would not commit any boots on the ground or take part in air strikes.

US secretary of state John Kerry has said he was “extremely encouraged” by the coalition that was building against the jihadists.

In a statement on Sunday, the UN Security Council condemned the murder of the 44 year-old British aid worker as "heinous and cowardly" and said that IS "must be defeated" following a video released of the beheading by the IS militants.

Two US hostages have also been killed by the group, which is threatening to 'execute' another British hostage. (pg)
