The man in question “had been under constant surveillance,” according to a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence, as cited by the Rzeczpospolita daily.

The Russian citizen was allegedly masquerading as a diplomat while actually spying for Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU).

In mid-October, Polish army officer Zbigniew J. (full name withheld under privacy laws) was one of two Polish citizens arrested under suspicion of spying.

According to the Ministry of Defence source, the Russian embassy employee's contacts “were carefully checked, and one of them turned out to be Zbigniew J.”

Colonel Zbigniew J. apparently met Russian embassy staff during ceremonies organized by the latter at Red Army cemeteries in in Poland.

The Polish colonel was the deputy director of the defence ministry's Education and Promotion of Defence Department.

A military court in Warsaw approved a three-month temporary arrest for the suspect. His lawyer is currently seeking his release. (nh)
