Former Conservative MP Mark Reckless made the controversial remarks on the last day of his campaign in the Rochester and Strood byelection, Kent.

In a Q&A session with ITV Meridian, the right-wing politician was asked what would happen to the “Polish plumber” if the UK left the European Union.

"I think in the near term we'd have to have a transitional period, and I think we should probably allow people who are currently here to have a work permit at least for a fixed period,'' he said.

Upon hearing this, the audience couldn't contain themselves and burst into laughter.

Mr Reckless also suggested introducing an “Australian style” points system for new immigrants.

According to BBC the campaign was ''utterly dominated by the issue of immigration.'' (rg)
