Marcin Nowalski will serve 5 years and 3 months in a UK prison, after which he will be deported to Poland.

Luton Crown Court found that the 34-year-old, together with another assailant, had robbed Pole Krzysztof Madej in June this year while the latter was sleeping rough in a disused Bedford garage.

According to Madej, he was accosted at dawn and the assailants stole his bank cards and mobile phone.

Madej was apparently battered with a metal pole by one of the attackers, while being held down by Nowalski.

After being pressurised into revealing his PIN number, the victim gave false details.

One of the assailants remained with him while the other went to the bank, but Madej managed to flee the scene, and he duly notified police.

The second attacker, known by the nickname of Tuptus, has yet to be tracked down. (nh)
