“President Gauck is planned to visit the European Solidarity Centre, although the dates are still being arranged with the German party,” head of the Chancellery, Joanna Trzaska-Wieczorek told the PAP news agency.

Trzaska-Wieczorek did not confirm that the meeting would take place on 13 December – the anniversary of the imposition of martial law in 1981 – as had been reported by Polish media.

Joachim Gauck was last in Poland in September to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II.

Both presidents then declared that mutual relations were very good, with Komorowski saying that “Polish-German relations are at an all-time high, not just in terms of politics, but also psychologically.”

The European Solidarity Centre was opened this year on the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Gdansk Agreement, which paved the way for the legalisation of the Solidarity trade union by the communist authorities. (jb)
