The affair came to light on Sunday in the wake of a separate outburst last week in which Mellor, once nicknamed 'the minister for fun', was recorded calling a London taxi driver ''a sweaty, stupid little sh*t.''

Tabloid The Sun on Sunday has now claimed that the former Conservative minister vented his spleen at a Polish security guard outside Mellor's luxury apartment block in Tower Hamlets, London.

"A 64-year-old man from Tower Hamlets was interviewed under caution by police on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence,'' police have confirmed.

The incident and questioning took place in March 2013.

''He attended an east London police station by appointment,'' police revealed, adding that he was not arrested.

Mellor served as Secretary of State for National Heritage in 1992, in Prime Minister John Major's government. He was obliged to resign owing to revelations concerning his private life. He is currently a businessman. (nh)
