The consignment for the camp in Zakho, Kurdistan was organised by Poland's SOS For Life Foundation.

Besides basic foodstuffs, the aid package included blankets, clothing, sanitary items as well as stationary and books for schoolchildren.

About 1.5 million Christians and Yasidis fled to Kurdistan as a result of the Islamic State's activities.

The 40-tonne Polish delivery to Zakho follows on from the first transport organised by the SOS For Life Foundation, a 10-tonne consignment that arrived on 16 November.

Father Tomasz Jegierski, who is helping distribute the aid, says that with the arrival of winter, items such as blankets are highly important, especially for children.

''The refugees accepted the gifts from us with great joy,'' he told the Rzeczpospolita daily, after the first delivery.

''More than once I saw tears in their eyes.'' (nh)
