Prior to the fatal accident, the 41-year-old priest had been spotted by police in an already bloodied state.

However, when officers approached the stationary vehicle, the priest apparently panicked and drove off.

The incident took place near Giessen, where the Pole had served as a vicar, having lived in Germany for ten years.

Shortly after the police attempted to intervene, the priest collided head on with another car.

The driver of the second vehicle was put into intensive care, while the Polish clergyman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The autopsy will in part try and determine what caused the injuries that occurred prior to the crash, and whether a third party was involved.

Besides the Catholic parish in Giessen, the 41-year-old also catered to the needs of the Polish community in the region. A fellow clergyman has said that the priest was due to visit a Polish family on Monday for some carolling. (nh)
