According to the Gazeta Wyborcza daily, Poland’s head of state is keen on holding the celebrations in Westerplatte, the site of initial clashes between Nazi Germany and Poland which triggered the war in 1939.

“The date of 8 May in the Russian-adopted narrative forged by the USSR is one of triumph, yet this triumph did not reward all nations in Europe with freedom,” Komorowski has stated in the run-up to May’s celebrations.

“A perfect site for this pan-European reflection should be Westerplatte, the symbol of the outbreak of World War II,” Komorowski’s statement continues.

According to the daily, all EU leaders have been added to the guest list, with initial talks having already taken place in capitals across Europe. (jb)
