''We cannot discuss among ourselves whether we should send troops to Ukraine,'' Wałęsa told Radio Gdańsk.

''What's needed is a sensible action,'' he said.

''To push back Russia and Putin it's necessary to get organised, everyone has to do something towards this, and that will contribute to the effectiveness of the operation,'' he argued.

''There has to be a wise, united, safe operation that is simultaneously effective,'' he stressed.

''If we don't show solidarity, there will be a war.

''That doesn't mean a nuclear war right away, but a growing escalation,'' he said. adding that Putin ''has to be stopped.'' (nh)
