After meeting Biden on Thursday, Sikorski will take part in an international conference in Washington held by the Atlantic Council and Latvia, which currently holds the rotating EU Council presidency, entitled ‘Toward a Transatlantic Strategy for Europe’s East’.

Sikorski is billed to address the panel ‘The Way Forward for the Eastern Partnership’ devoted to the future of the EU programme. Spearheaded since 2008 by Poland and Sweden, it aims to bring the former Soviet states of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine closer to European structures. The programme is part of the European Neighbourhood Policy.

After the conference, Poland’s former foreign minister is to hold a series of meetings with American congressmen and experts, including former presidential security adviser Zbigniew Brzeziński. The agenda of all the talks gives prominence to Eastern Europe and the situation in Ukraine. (mk/jb)
