“As a member of the anti-Hitler coalition, Poland, of course, has every right to celebrate Victory Day. I recall that the Parliament has already considered and will consider moving the date of the celebration from 9 May to 8 May,” former Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said.

President Bronisław Komorowski had earlier said that the decision to bring forward the date is not “to spoil the Russians their military victory celebrations”.

These comments follow an earlier interview by Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna that he does not understand why the celebrations are regularly held in Moscow.

Russian officials rebuffed the statement. Grigory Karasin, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister said that Schetyna’s comments were an insult to the millions of people who died in the war. (rg)
