The announcement was made by Joanna Trzaska-Wieczorek from the Presidential Chancellery, Friday morning.

“It is difficult to imagine the president’s participation in a military parade of an army which is party to aggression in Ukraine,” Trzaska-Wiezcorek told Polish Radio.

The comments come as President Komorowski recently mooted the idea of holding VE-Day celebrations on 8 May at Gdańsk’s Westerplatte, where the war erupted in 1939.

The 9 May is one of the most important state holidays in the Russian calendar, with a large-scale military parade which marches through Moscow’s Red Square. It is still not known whether any world leaders will be present in the Russian capital for the celebrations.

“If the escalation of events in Ukraine will continue, there should not be any European leader in Moscow on 9 May,” former president, Aleksander Kwaśniewski told broadcaster TVP Info on Thursday. (jb)
