The trip marks the first visit by a Polish head of state to Japan in seven years, following on from President Lech Kaczynski's stay in 2008.

''I am going to Japan today to build special strategic relations between our countries,'' Komorowski told Polish Radio on Wednesday morning.

The president noted that the trip will include an audience with the Emperor and Empress of Japan.

A meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is also scheduled.

The trip had been postponed owing to chronic delays in the vote count during Poland's November local elections.

''I would like to thank the Japanese for showing a full understanding of the situation,'' Komorowski underlined. (nh)
