MEP Waldemar Tomaszewski of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (LLRA) came third in the Vilnius vote on Sunday.

Owing to no outright majority, current mayor Arturas Zuoakas (18 percent), chairman of the centre-right Lithuanian Freedom Union will take part in a second round in a fortnight's time, although he is currently second in popularity to liberal Remigijus Szimaszius (34 percent).

The Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (LLRA) had joined forces in the local elections with another minority party, the Alliance of Russians, fielding 500 candidates in 13 municipalities.

Although the results of Sunday's votes are still coming in, the LLRA has traditionally ruled in the Vilnius and Salcininkai regions, where ethnic Poles predominate.

Over 40 percent of eligible voters took part yesterday. Ultimately, 1524 figures, including councillors and 60 mayors, will be elected. (nh)
