The foreign ministers will also visit Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, which is also implementing difficult reforms with a view to integration with the European Union.

“Both countries have association agreements with the European Union and are implementing ambitious reforms,” said Marcin Wojciechowski, the spokesperson for the Polish foreign ministry.

Both countries also face the threat of pro-Russian separatism: while the larger Ukraine has seen Russia grab its sovereign territory of Crimea and foster an ongoing civil war in Donbas, Russian peacekeepers have propped up distant Moldova's Transdnistria region, which has enjoyed semi-independence since the early 1990s.
