On Tuesday a Russian court gave the go-ahead for the eviction of the Polish consulate-general from its grounds in St. Petersburg on account of unpaid rent of RUB 74.3 million (EUR 1.1 million).

Any moves to evict the diplomats would constitute a gross violation of international law, the Polish foreign ministry said through a spokesperson. Poland calls for resolution of the dispute through dialogue.

The consulate-general is located at Sovetska street 12/14 in St. Petersburg, which belongs to the Russian state-owned company, Inpredservis and the mayoralty of St. Petersburg.

Poland declines to pay the rent, alleging an intergovernmental agreement of the 1970s that envisaged swapping ownership of properties occupied by the countries’ diplomatic missions. Poland has handed over the buildings that by Russian diplomats occupy and expects reciprocity. (an)
