Poland’s failure to provide legal aid to the Russian investigation into the April 2010 plane crash that killed President Lech Kaczyński and nearly 100 others renders its completion impossible, Moscow said on Thursday.

The wreck of the plane, which crashed on April 10, 2010 at Smolensk in western Russia, constitutes evidence and may only be handed over after the investigation is closed, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

Poland has repeatedly called for an immediate handover of the wreck.

“I consider cooperation with the Polish authorities over the course of the investigation as constructive and fruitful,” the committee’s head, General Vladimir Markin said. “Nevertheless there remain requests from the Russian side that have not been met by our Polish colleagues, which makes it impossible to make the final decisions in this case.”

Markin rejected as unfounded suggestions that responsibility for the incident is borne by the Russian air-traffic controllers. (an)
