Zbigniew H. (name withheld under privacy laws) was detained shortly after the girl's naked body was found in a wooded area in the town, late on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim, named only as Chloe, was abducted while playing in a Calais park at about 3 pm local time.

Witnesses saw the child being led into a red SEAT Toledo car.

The car, which reportedly belonged to the 38-year-old Polish suspect, was found not far from the body.

Police have announced that the girl appears to have been strangled.

The murder, which has gained front page coverage in France, has shocked the country.

French newspaper Le Parisien claims that the chief suspect has a long criminal record, taking in convictions in both Poland and France.

He frequently moved between the two countries after 2000, before finally settling in France in 2009. French media sources claim that besides convictions for kidnapping, robbery and assault, the man also has a long history of alcohol abuse. (nh)
