Polish vessel Juno was transporting 19,000 metric tonnes of sugar from the Bahamas when it got into difficulties in the seaway, a 370-mile long network of locks, canals and channels that links the Atlantic with the Great Lakes of Northern America.

A steering problem apparently occurred, leading to a threat of crashing into the Thousand Islands International Bridge system that connects New York State with southeastern Ontario, Canada.

The Polish Steamship Company (Polsteam) bulker ran aground on Monday but it was not until Tuesday that Canadian vessels reached the site.

Representatives of US agency the St Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation managed to board the bulker beforehand, carrying out an assessment of the situation.

It remains unclear at present why the Juno ran into problems. However, it has been confirmed that no crew-members were injured, nor as there any fuel spillage or cargo loss. (nh)
