The identification process lasted three days, following the initial find on Thursday near Maastricht.

The police were alerted after a wooden box was spotted floating down the canal.

When opened, police discovered the body of a woman who had suffered knife wounds.

It is understood that the woman had lived for several years in Belgium, but that she had had no fixed address in recent months.

A murder probe is underway. (nh)
