A spokesman for the Maersk company has expressed bewilderment as to why the vessel was apprehended.

The Danish firm has claimed the container was sailing along an international shipping lane, although Teheran has said the vessel had entered Iranian waters.

Nevertheless, the company has communicated that the crew are safe and “in good spirits.”

The container was about to enter the Strait of Hormuz when a warning shot was fired by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, members of which duly boarded the Tigris.

The incident prompted the US Navy to send a destroyer to survey the situation, after the Danish container sent out a distress signal.

Iranian patrol boats escorted the Maersk Tigris to the port of Bandar Abbas, where it is currently moored. (nh)
