Polish President Bronisław Komorowski said that the idea behind the upcoming end-of-WWII commemorations is not a “test” to see who is a friend of Poland.

Komorowski believes that more important than who attends the celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, is the intrinsic meaning of the celebration.

“This is an event that is not a test to see who is our friend, but to carry out a joint reflection on the history of Europe,” President Komorowski told Polish Radio.

He explained that the events planned for the 7 and 8 May in Poland’s Westerplatte will include speeches by historians, as well as global policy makers, who will say what the end of WWII meant for their respective nations.

Komorowski also announced that the Presidential Chancellery will shortly reveal a list of who will take part in the celebrations.

President Komorowski has invited dozen of Western leaders to attend the commemorations of VE in Poland’s Westerplatte, one of the first areas to be attacked by Nazi German troops in the 1939 invasion of Poland. (rg)
