The special train left Wednesday from the Belgian capital and will commemorate the defeat of Nazism and Fascism in Europe.

The 1,000 students come from various European countries including Belgium, and embarked on a symbolic 25-hour train ride from Brussels to the Polish city of Kraków. At their destination, they will visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, the site of a former Nazi German death camp.

Together with their teachers they will also meet former inmates of concentration camps and take part in numerous cultural projects.

The "Train 1000" is an educational project whose aim is to preserve the memory of the Holocaust. The students have prepared for the trip over the last year, including participating in discussions on the Holocaust and genocide.

The project was supported by the Polish Embassy in Brussels. (rg)
