The country will host next year’s NATO summit.

Komorowski spoke after Wednesday’s meeting of the National Security Council, which focused on preparations for the summit.

It is to convene in Warsaw in July 2016. The President said the summit will review the implementation of the decisions of the 2014 summit in Newport, which are ‘important for Poland’s security’.

He recalled that Poland recently increased its defense spending to two percent of the GDP, adding that it would urge other NATO members to increase their military expenditure in response to Russia’s moves.

In a related development, President Komorowski has approved a decision to prolong the mandate of the Polish military contingent in Afghanistan for another six months.

It is part of NATO’s Resolute Support mission, which began in January this year, replacing the International Security Assistance Force ISAF. Poland’s Resolute Support contingent numbers 200 troops and civilian staff and is focused on the training of and advise to Afghan security forces.

President Komorowski’s term of office ends on 6 August, the day his successor Andrzej Duda will be sworn in as Poland’s new head of state. (mk/rg)
