Greece is a "huge warning" for Poland, PM Ewa Kopacz said on Saturday during an extraordinary meeting of the government's Economic Council in Warsaw.

“The effects of what has happened there [in Greece] result from irresponsible promises made by politicians,” Kopacz said.

Greeks vote in a referendum on Sunday on whether to accept the terms of the latest bailout package offered by the troika of the European Commission (EC), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the European Central Bank (ECB)

"Either they will vote yes and that will mean a lot of very hard work to meet expectations of those that want to help them, or vote no and this would be a significant turning point in the history of the European community,” Kopacz said.

"I would prefer us [Poles] to be clever before the fall rather than after,” the PM went on.

Kopacz also said she would not enter into an “auction” with the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) candidate Beata Szydło in this autumn’s parliamentary elections on pre-election political promises.

“There were a lot of promises made in the last presidential election, like a trampoline to success," Kopacz said. (jh)
