“Because of the difficult weather conditions and terrain, the rescue operation could not continue,” said Jerzy Natkański, director of the Foundation for Polish Mountaineering.
The Polish climber went missing on Saturday on the Gasherbrum II mountain, between the first and second camp.
Olek Ostrowski, along with another mountaineer, Piotr Śnigórski, descended toward the base on skis. At one point Ostrowski disappeared. He most likely fell into a crevice.
Ostrowski’s last post on his Facebook page read: “I’m going to ski in Karakorum. We will be away for a while! […] See you soon…”
The Gasherbrum II mountain lies on the Pakistani and Chinese border and is over 8,000 metres high. It is the 13th highest mountain in the world. (rg/rk)
