The money is designed for creating and improving conditions in centres for refugees, asylum procedures and integration of immigrants, the European Commission said on Monday.

Most of the funds – EUR 63.4 million - will come from the EU Fund for Asylum, Migration and Integration. The EC announced on Monday that it had approved the Polish programme’s activities financed from this fund.

The remaining EUR 5.9 million are funds for "specific measures" taken together with other countries, for example joint projects concerning the return of immigrants to their countries of origin and reintegration.

In August, the European Commission approved a total of 23 national programmes using funds from the Fund for Asylum, Migration and Integration and the Internal Security Fund for a total of EUR 2.4 billion in 2014-2020. The biggest support will go to Italy and Greece, struggling with the influx of immigrants from across the Mediterranean, as well as Spain. Italy will get EUR 558 million and Greece EUR 474 million.
